It was 4 30 am. We were on the summit climb to the Kedarkantha peak. The trail was barely lit by the moon and our torches. We were four of us, way ahead of the rest of the group. As we marched along, little did we know that we had taken the wrong turn. It was still a trail leading to the peak, but a longer and more confusing one. .

Not sure of what to do, we stood and contemplated. But before we knew it, Sheru, the lion-like shepherd dog overtook us and led us all the way to the peak. It was a mad decision to follow him, but it’s a good thing we did. We had to walk fast to keep up with him, but when we reached the peak, it was still 7 am, the sun was beginning to rise above the mountains in front of us. Witnessing dawn at 12,500ft is just something else!

It was one of the most magical experiences. It’s always useful to have these dogs around you. You don’t know when they’ll lead the way or when they’ll protect you from the wild.
